Alex Hoffman is a graduate of the University of Kansas' journalism school whose credits include Midwest Commercial Journal, Lawrence Magazine, KC Magazine, Shawnee Magazine and currently, 435 South Magazine in suburban Kansas City. His wide interests are reflected in all of his pieces for Suite101, which offer analyses on such topics as classical music, rock music, television, pop culture and sports.

As a classical music essayist, his highly specific interest in 20th- and 21st-century American composers is rooted in his passion for orchestral music. His emphasis lies in American symphonists such as Paul Creston, William Schuman, Vincent Persichetti, Howard Hanson, Peter Mennin, David Diamond and Robert Ward, as well as the music of Copland, Bernstein and Barber. Although not limited to this list, he is also an admirer of Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Ravel, Debussy, Hindemith, Honegger, Bartok and John Adams, among other 19th- and 20th-century composers.

Recently his focus has shifted slightly to indepth interviews with figures of his choosing from entertainment and the arts. The subjects have included TV actors, orchestra conductors and a retrospective on Leonard Bernstein.

When he's not writing, Alex is a devoted fan of his Kansas Jayhawks, a huge admirer of Rafael Nadal, a believer in "Friday Night Lights" saddened by its conclusion, an 80s music connoisseur and an avid golfer.
